Revival: Lesson 13
A meaningless world engenders fear.

If the world is meaningless then what are we doing here? Are we just floating through an abyss of nothingness? I really don’t think so!
I like to have a reference point for where I fit in the context of what’s around me. It helps give meaning to my interpretation of the world. For example, when I travel to places I’ve never been before I like to “land” – check into the hotel and get my bearings. Then I venture out to explore. Without a home base I feel disoriented, which can create a low grade fear.
One of the fundamental principles in learning is to build new information upon what is already known. It’s relational learning. The same applies to experiencing our world. Once I see where I fit in relation to the world (that unfamiliar environment), the fear dissolves and transforms into curiosity to experience this new world.
The point here is that it’s not so much that the WORLD is meaningless. It’s that when we get separated from its meaning, thereby creating a void, we grasp onto something to fill that void and guess what, fear is within easy reach. So notice, just for today, what do you reach for when you encounter meaninglessness? Fear or fascination – consternation or curiosity?
