Over the years of my career in corporate training, organization development and career/life coaching, I’ve worked with hundreds of people. I’ve noticed two constants that prevail across industries, geography, educational level and social backgrounds. The first is that people really want to do a good job. I can truly say that I’ve never met anyone who deliberately came to work, day in and day out, to sabotage their work or others.
The second is people’s commitment and passion to do a good job takes a nose dive when they are directed to do meaningless work or when they perceive that their work is meaningless.
Imagine if you awoke on a Monday morning knowing that what you were going to do that day would make a positive impact in your family, organization, community or even the world. How would you approach your day? Dragging out of bed with dread or rising to the shine of the opportunity ahead?
Yet, what’s “meaningful” to one person, may not carry the same potency for another. That’s what makes our world so dynamic.
So for today, notice what you notice. Do you see a meaningless, fearful, dangerous world? Do you see a good, peaceful, kind, creative world? How does what you notice inform you of what is meaningful to you?
